When I was a kid I was interested by caterpillars, but had trouble with the word. To me, the dulcet small woolly-bear traversing my hand was a “calipitter.” It was only years subsequent I learned that a calipitter is an instrument used to measure the straight line of a tracked vehicle to the nearby micron. Caterpillars continue to sake me, though I no drawn-out effort them universally cute.
